County Parks encourages strong, young swimmers ages 10-17
to enroll in the Cayucos Beach Junior Lifeguard Program. This
program offers a great opportunity for youngsters to spend
quality time with United States Lifeguarding Association (U.S.L.A.)
trained open-water instructors. This is a "skill-building"
program that emphasizes healthy exercise, teamwork and most
of all, FUN! We hope your child enjoys their Junior
Lifeguard experience. We are committed to giving the very
highest level of service to our community.
PROGRAM DETAILS
- Perform rescue techniques and learn princliples of beach
lifeguarding.
- Understand responsibilities and expectations of aquatic
personnel and first responders.
- Build teamwork and leadership skills.
- Learn the ecology and environment of the bay, beach and
ocean.
- Become skilled at open water rescues.
- Increase swimming skills, speed and endurance.
- HAVE FUN!!
AGE: Kids ages 10 - 17
SKILL LEVEL TESTING:
This program demands above average swimming ability and children should have a slight to moderate level of comfort swimming in the ocean. To participate
in the program all returning and new participants must satisfactorily complete the
following Skill Level Tests on the first day of the session:
- swim 100 yards in under 3 minutes
- swim 10 yards underwater
- tread water for 5 minutes
CODE OF CONDUCT:
Each participant AND parent will be required to sign a "Code
of Conduct" and "Rules and Discipline" statement.
Unacceptable behavior, language or disrespectful attitude to any person WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. Participants
who do not follow these rules will be dismissed from the program and NO REFUND will be processed.
ATTENDANCE: Attendance is required for all three weeks. The first day of each session will meet at Hardie Pool in Cayucos. A Cayucos Beach Junior Lifeguard Program schedule will be handed out to all participants/parents. Please note that changes to the schedule can occur and we wil make every effort to notify parents and participants of those changes. Most you will meet at the Cayucos Beach Junior Lifeguard tower unless
prior notification is given.
UNIFORM:
Our program participants will receive a Jr. Lifeguard t-shirt and board shorts to be worn each
day. Sweatshirts will also be available at an extra charge.
EQUIPMENT:
Wetsuits
are strongly recommended. Water temperatures range
from 60-65 degrees throughout the summer. All participants must wear their CBJG uniform and come prepared each day along with bringing proper
equipment and supplies. Wetsuits are not provided.
WHAT TO BRING EACH DAY:
First Day at Hardie Pool: swimsuits, towels, goggles
(if preferred), snacks/lunch and water.
Cayucos Beach Days: uniform, sweatshirt, warm clothes, swim gear, wetsuits, fins, towels, pencil, body
boards, surfboards, lunch, water and SUNSCREEN!
BREAKS: This program does not provide meals. Please
bring plenty of water and snacks. There will be a 1/2 hour
supervised lunch break each day.
2008 REGISTRATION INFORMATION
SESSIONS:
Session I: June 23 - July 11 (No class on July 4) - COMPLETE
Session II: July 21 - August 8 - as of 7/16/08 there are 4 openings available
TIMES: 9am - 2pm (Monday thru Friday)
FEE: $165 per participant. Fee includes: Lifeguard Manual, T-shirt and Boardshort.
REGISTRATION BEGINS:
Monday, April 28, 2008.You may fax or mail your completed Junior Lifeguard Registration Form . Walk-in
registration will be available at the SLO County Parks Administrative
Office at 1087 Santa Rosa Street, San Luis Obispo (Monday
thru Friday 8am-5pm) beginning Monday, April 28, 2008. Early registration will not be accepted.
